The race pictured here is the 1904 Vanderbilt Cup, run on a closed circuit of public roads on Long Island, New York. The event was put on by William K. Vanderbilt Jr. and drew European and American automobile makers to a contest of speed and endurance at a time when the car was still a novelty on American roads. The print is an enlargement from a motion picture by the American Mutoscope & Biograph Company, so its detail comes from a single film frame, and the date and other details come from an old caption card that has not been independently verified.
