Penfield's cover for the January 19, 1903, issue of *Collier's* was a special "Automobile Number," and its lithograph shows a woman dressed for the road, a pairing that signals how the motor car had become a subject of fashion as well as engineering. In 1903 automobiles were still costly and uncommon, mostly owned by wealthy families, and driving required protective clothing such as long coats, hats tied down with veils, and goggles. Penfield was one of the most admired illustrators of the period, and his magazine covers helped define the bold, flat color style of American graphic design in the early 1900s.
