Rather than a motorcar, this 1897 poster for *Harper's March* shows carriages and city life, a reminder of how urban transport looked just before the automobile began to change the streets. Edward Penfield, one of the leading illustrators of the American poster boom of the 1890s, produced many bold, flat-color advertisements for Harper's publications, and his simplified forms helped make magazine posters collectible art. Printed in color to catch the eye of passersby, the work was meant to sell the month's issue, and today it offers a clear view of late-nineteenth-century American life.
