The Standard brand name once marked gas stations across much of the country, and Edward Ruscha turns its familiar canopy and sign into flat, saturated color. Ruscha, a Los Angeles artist associated with Pop art, had earlier photographed gasoline stations for his 1962 book *Twentysix Gasoline Stations*, and he returned to the roadside station as a subject in later prints. The screenprint is signed and dated in pencil by the artist. It captures how the automobile shaped American commercial landscapes in the 1960s.
