A stagecoach and a steam locomotive share the same frame in this color piece, titled *The Meeting of the Ways*, which captures the moment two modes of travel came together. It is a photomechanical reproduction of a color drawing by illustrator Stanley M. Arthurs, made around 1900, when printed color reproductions of artwork were becoming common in books and magazines. The subjects are the 1830s to 1850s, when rail lines began to challenge the horse-drawn coach as the fastest way to travel. Hung among pictures of automobiles, it is a useful reminder that motor travel grew out of a much older transportation story.
