Few covers of the period put a woman at the wheel as squarely as this one does, and the title, "Shifting for herself," plays on both the gearshift and the independence that cars offered young women in the 1920s. John Held Jr. was one of the best-known illustrators of the Jazz Age, and his work for *Life*, then a humor weekly rather than the photo magazine it later became, satirized fashion, flappers and the new freedoms of the decade. Printed as a color halftone, the cover shows how commercial reproduction had made such images a staple of American newsstands by 1927.
