Few early motorists were as well known as John Jacob Astor IV, the New York businessman pictured inside an automobile around 1903. Cars of that period were still a novelty, and early motoring was largely a pastime of wealthy owners who contended with rough roads and few traffic rules. Astor later became known for his interest in engineering and invention, and he died aboard the RMS Titanic in April 1912. The date is approximate, taken from an unverified caption card.
