Few places in the Rockies offered a drive like the one up Pikes Peak, and this print shows the "W's" near Ragged Edge, a stretch of the mountain road where the route doubles back on itself in a tight zigzag. The Pikes Peak Auto Road, built as a toll road and completed to the 14,115-foot summit in 1916, was among the first routes in the country to carry ordinary motor cars to such heights. Photographs from the 1920s like this one document how the new road turned a long mule trip into a half-day outing for tourists, and they show how much engineering went into cutting a graded roadbed across steep, exposed slopes.
