The photograph shows open touring cars with sightseers just short of the summit of Pikes Peak in Colorado. The Pikes Peak Auto Highway, a gravel toll road cut up the mountain's flank, was completed in 1915, the year this picture was made. Before then, reaching the top meant a slow carriage ride, a hike, or the cog railway, so a motor trip to the summit was a new and somewhat daring outing. Drivers of the period took pride in such climbs, and the exposed seats and folding fabric tops of these cars left passengers fully open to the wind and the views.
