A wrecker, the period term for a tow truck, drags a crashed automobile up a steep embankment in this 1930 view from Illinois. Wrecker trucks of this era carried winches and cables so they could recover cars from ditches and roadsides where ordinary vehicles could not reach. The photograph was copyrighted by Van Auken Ragland, a Chicago firm, which suggests it was made for commercial sale or publication rather than as a private snapshot. It documents a routine but dangerous part of motoring in the early automobile age, when roads were narrower and less forgiving than they are today.
