Here Charlie Chaplin appears in a poster for a short Keystone comedy filmed at a real automobile race in Venice, California, in early 1914. Chaplin's tramp character, with its baggy trousers, oversized shoes, and small mustache, is often cited as making its first screen appearance in this film, which makes the poster an early record of a figure who would soon become one of the best-known comic personas of the silent era. Hennegan & Co. of Cincinnati printed the sheet as a color lithograph, the standard method for theater advertising of the period.
