The bridge named here crossed the Schuylkill River near the Fairmount Water Works, the pumping station that supplied drinking water to central Philadelphia. Its suspension design was an engineering talking point of its day, and the span drew visitors who wanted to see how a long, lightly built crossing could carry heavy traffic. The water works and the bridge together show how the city was expanding its public infrastructure and linking the old town to the growing districts west of the river. Looking at the picture, notice how the bridge's cables and towers stand out against the riverbank and the surrounding park landscape.
