Fairmount Park, the sprawling green space along the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, is the subject of this stereograph card from 1870. The card was issued by James Cremers' Stereoscopic Emporium on South Eighth Street, one of the many studios that sold stereo views to a public eager for scenes of far-off and local places. Stereographs like this one were viewed through a hand-held stereoscope, which fused two slightly offset images into a single three-dimensional scene. The park was growing in importance in these years and would host the Centennial Exhibition in 1876, so this card captures it during a period of rising civic pride.
