Fifth Avenue in New York City is the setting for this 1913 view of an Easter crowd. For decades, New Yorkers had turned the holiday into a promenade along the avenue, where people showed off new spring hats and clothes after church services. The negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, the work of the Bain News Service, a commercial agency that sold news photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Its title comes from caption information the agency wrote on the negatives, so the exact location and time are worth checking against other sources.
