Fifth Avenue in New York City, photographed on Easter in 1913, captures the city's annual parade, when churchgoers and well-dressed strollers filled the avenue in new spring clothes and hats. The Easter promenade had been a fixture of Manhattan life for decades, drawing crowds to see and be seen between services. The picture is one of the glass negatives made by the Bain News Service, a photo agency that supplied images to newspapers, and its scene offers a record of urban fashion and street life just before World War I.
