The title places this scene on Fifth Avenue in New York on Easter, when the avenue was a traditional stage for the Easter promenade, with churchgoers and holiday strollers showing off new spring clothes and hats. The image is a glass negative from the Bain News Service, the wire-photo agency run by George Grantham Bain in the early twentieth century, whose collection at the Library of Congress holds a vast body of city street scenes. The record gives no date, and the title comes from caption data the archive has not verified, so the exact year is uncertain. Still, the subject is a good window onto how New Yorkers marked the holiday in public.
