Most of the Currier & Ives seasonal prints show farm life at a distance, but this one focuses on the homestead itself as the center of the spring scene. Issued in New York in 1869, it is a hand-colored lithograph, one of the many sheets the firm produced for a middle-class public that bought affordable pictures of rural domestic life. The firm's prints were often sold through shops and by subscription, and their bright color was added by hand, so no two copies were exactly alike. The record cites the Gale Research catalog raisonné of the firm's output, which is a useful starting point for anyone tracing the series.
