Currier & Ives issued this hand-colored lithograph in 1868 as part of their long-running series on rural American life, and it presents a farmstead in full summer leaf. Lithographs of this kind were produced in quantity for a broad middle-class market, so the scene was meant to be recognizable to viewers who lived in towns as well as those who worked the land. Look closely at the coloring, which was applied by hand after printing and gives the foliage and sky their warmth. The print is catalogued in the firm's standard reference listing, a useful record of how the company's season and homestead scenes were arranged.
