Model D1 belongs to Frank Lloyd Wright's American System-Built Homes, a line of standardized house designs he developed in the early 1910s. Its plan and proportions reflect his Prairie style, with low rooflines, horizontal emphasis, and open living spaces. Wright intended the system to bring well-designed houses within reach of middle-income families by having components cut in a factory and assembled on site. The idea was ambitious, and only a limited number of these houses were actually built, which makes surviving examples and original drawings of particular interest to architectural historians.
