Model J401 belongs to Frank Lloyd Wright's American System-Built Houses, a scheme he developed around 1911 to make well-designed homes affordable through standardized, factory-made parts. The idea was to build the house from a set of interchangeable components that could be produced in quantity and assembled on site, a radical notion for the period when most houses were built one at a time by hand. Wright's system was an early attempt to bring industrial methods to domestic architecture, and its emphasis on simple geometry and open interior space foreshadows the prairie-style ideas he was already known for. The model number tells you this is one entry in a catalog of designs, not a single commissioned house.
