Cienfuegos sits on a bay on Cuba's southern coast, a port founded by French settlers in 1819 and shaped by the sugar trade that brought it wealth. This view of its theater dates to about 1901, a few years after the Spanish-American War ended Spanish rule and left the island under American military administration. The Detroit Publishing Company sent photographers across the United States and abroad to record towns and public buildings, and this picture reflects that effort to document civic life in a Cuba undergoing rapid change. The caption information is old and unverified, so the building's exact identity is worth checking against other sources.
