Rising about 1,234 meters in the Sierra Maestra above Santiago de Cuba, La Gran Piedra takes its name from a huge boulder perched near the summit. The record gives the date as 1964 with a question mark, so the exact year is uncertain. Visitors have long made the climb for wide views over the mountains and toward the Caribbean coast. The Sierra Maestra was also the base of Fidel Castro's rebel forces in the late 1950s, which gives landscapes from this range a historical weight beyond their scenery.
