Tondo, on the north side of Manila, was a working-class district along the Pasig River, and its railroad station sat on the line that linked the city with the central Luzon plains. The photograph dates from between 1900 and 1920, a period when the Philippines was under American colonial administration and the rail network was being reorganized, first under the Manila Railroad Company formed in 1902. Stations like this one carried sugar, rice, and passengers, so they show how rail shaped daily movement in the city. The record gives no photographer's name, so the image is best read as a document of the station and its era.
