Few towns in Tidewater Virginia owed as much to the railroad as Newport News, and this view of its station, with a clock tower rising above the platform, shows how central rail travel was to the community. The photograph dates from roughly 1905 to 1915, a period when the city was growing quickly around its deepwater harbor, its coal piers, and the shipyard that had opened in the late 1880s. Stations like this one were the public face of a rail line, where travelers, freight workers, and townspeople passed through every day. The clock tower is worth a second look, since such towers were common civic landmarks that kept schedules visible to the whole town.
