Bismarck grew up around the Northern Pacific Railway, which reached the Missouri River crossing in 1873 and turned a small settlement into a regional hub. Local firms such as the Capital Bookstore published views of the town like this one in the years between 1910 and 1930, when rail travel was still the main way people and goods moved across the Dakotas. The Wittemann Collection, now held by the Library of Congress, keeps prints of this kind, which document how the depot and the trains served the state capital.
