Agriculture Secretary William Jardine is the figure this picture is built around, shown at an amaryllis show in Washington in March 1925, shortly after he took office under President Calvin Coolidge. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that recorded government officials, public events and city life in the 1910s and 1920s, made such images for newspapers and magazines. Worth noticing are the streaks and blemishes across the glass, which come from deterioration in the original coatings rather than from the scene itself.
