An official at the Agriculture Department, Dr. H.W. Schoening, is the subject of this 1925 glass negative, and the March 20 date appears in its title. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio active in Washington in the 1920s, produced many portraits of government staff and offices, and this plate belongs to that body of work. The name and date come from the company's notes on the negative sleeve and have not been independently verified. The streaks and blemishes across the glass reflect the gradual breakdown of its original coating over time.
