Two performers from Singer's Midgets, Louis Vasshek and Dora Vieg, are the subjects here, shown being sworn in by a police department on November 3, 1924. The troupe was a touring vaudeville act, and staged swearing-in ceremonies like this one gave both police departments and performers a bit of newspaper attention while the act was in town. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that photographed the city and its visitors for decades, made the negative, which later came to the Library of Congress as a gift. The glass plate shows streaks and blemishes from natural deterioration of its coating, a common sign of wear in negatives of this age.
