The record pairs Louis E. Stoddard with Maj. Oscar Solben, though part of the caption was lost when the negative was scratched, so the second name is incomplete. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio active from about 1906 to 1934, made many such portraits and event pictures, and its glass plates were often labeled from the sitters or occasions it recorded. The date of 1924 is an estimate based on neighboring negatives rather than a documented date. Visible streaks and blemishes come from the deterioration of the original coating, which is common in glass plates of this age.
