A baby show at the Plaza, held on what the record gives as August 29, 1922, is the occasion for this portrait of a young entrant named Tootsie Nolan. Baby shows were popular contests of the period, in which infants were put on display and judged, often to draw crowds and attention to local businesses and events. The picture is a glass negative from the National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio whose large body of work records the city in the early twentieth century. Faint streaks and blemishes across the plate come from natural deterioration of the original coating, and they are worth noticing when viewing the image.
