Set in the Upper Geyser Basin, this group portrait records President Chester A. Arthur's 1883 tour of Yellowstone, the first trip to the park by a sitting president. Traveling with Secretary of War Robert Todd Lincoln and General Philip Sheridan, the party posed amid the thermal features that drew growing numbers of visitors in the early 1880s. The albumen print comes from an album that also holds scenery views and copies of the Associated Press dispatches the group sent while on the road, pairing the images with a contemporary written record of the journey.
