Castle Geyser, in the Upper Geyser Basin of Yellowstone National Park, is named for the tall, weathered cone of silica deposits that rises at its base, which early visitors thought resembled a ruined fortress. The geyser is one of the basin's most reliable performers, erupting on a long but predictable cycle, and it has drawn tourists since the park's early years in the 1870s and 1880s. Its cone, built up over centuries from mineral-rich water, is worth noticing as much as the eruption itself.
