Made in 1904, this platinum print by Gertrude Käsebier carries the title *The Heritage of Motherhood* and shows the soft, pictorial style that made her one of the best-known American portrait photographers of her day. Käsebier, a member of the Photo-Secession circle led by Alfred Stieglitz, favored diffused focus and simplified composition, which gave everyday maternal subjects the weight of allegory. Platinum paper, which she used often, yields the matte, subtle gray tones suited to such a quiet, idealized image. The library's record notes that the negative is damaged, which makes the surviving print worth examining closely.
