Robert Fulton, the engineer best known for the steamboat Clermont's 1807 run up the Hudson, is the subject of this engraved portrait, which was made from a painting by an artist named Chappel. The print credits the original as held by the publishers, Johnson, Fry & Co. of New York, and carries a c1881 date, so it was produced decades after Fulton's death in 1815, when interest in early American technology and its heroes was growing. Engravings like this one were widely sold and reprinted, making them a common way for Americans of the late nineteenth century to picture the inventors who had shaped the country's industry.
