A dense crowd fills the scene at the Metropolitan theater, the F Street house in Washington, D.C., captured on an 8 by 6 inch glass negative by the National Photo Company. The theater opened in 1915 and presented vaudeville and, later, motion pictures, so the gathering points to the draw of a popular evening show in the years just after the First World War. The National Photo Company documented the capital's streets, storefronts and public life during this period, making its negatives a valuable record of the city. The title and the date of about 1920 to 1921 come from data written on the negative and from similar negatives in the collection, so some details may be provisional.
