Harriet Prescott Spofford, the Newburyport, Massachusetts, writer whose stories and poems appeared often in the *Atlantic Monthly*, sits for this portrait, which was made at the New York studio of Sarony. The Sarony house, on Union Square, was one of the best-known portrait studios of the late nineteenth century and drew writers, actors and public figures. The glass negative later entered the files of the Bain News Service, a press photo agency that supplied pictures to newspapers. The record does not give a date, and the title comes from caption information that has not been verified.
