Few postwar posters tie a political grievance to race as directly as this one. Its German title, roughly "Protest of German Women Against the Colored Occupation on the Rhine," points to the African soldiers serving in the French forces that occupied the Rhineland after 1918. Nationalist campaigns of the early 1920s, often called the "Black Shame" campaign, used images like this to portray those troops as a threat to German women and to rally public outrage at home and abroad. Read today, the poster shows how racist imagery was used to turn a military occupation into a national grievance.
