Wofford Fitting School in Spartanburg, South Carolina, was the preparatory department of Wofford College, the Methodist-affiliated college founded in 1854. It prepared boys for college-level study at a time when public high schools were still scarce across the state. In 1909 Spartanburg was a growing Upstate city whose economy rested on cotton mills and the railroads that hauled their output, and mill work drew families from surrounding farms into town. The 1895 state constitution had already stripped most Black men of the vote, and segregation shaped daily life, so the students on these grounds grew up in a white civic order that the college largely took for granted.
