The ice bridge that formed across the Niagara River gorge in winter was a striking sight, as the river's lower reaches froze solid and held a thick span of ice between the cliffs. Visitors sometimes walked across these bridges, though the ice was often unstable and the crossings were dangerous. This 1912 glass negative comes from the Bain News Service, a New York agency whose photographers covered news and notable sights for newspapers of the day. Its title is taken from the original caption cards, which are not independently verified.
