This photograph records a sculpture of Philosophy, a personified allegorical figure, by the Boston-born sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt. Pratt was known for Beaux-Arts figure work, and allegorical sculptures like this one were common in the civic and public buildings of his era, where they expressed learning and virtue through a human form. The print was made by the L.C. Handy Studio, a Washington, D.C., photography firm that documented a good deal of the capital's art and architecture. The caption card carries no date, so the exact year of the photograph is uncertain, but its Washington origin ties it to the city's building boom of the late 1800s and early 1900s.
