The East Front of the Library of Congress faces the Capitol, and this 1937 May print records the building's most formal side, the one most visitors saw first as they approached from the Capitol grounds. The main building, completed in 1897 and designed in the Beaux-Arts style by John L. Smithmeyer and Paul J. Pelz, was meant to express the young republic's ambitions for learning, with its sculpture, carved stone, and classical proportions. By 1937 the library was a major national institution, and photographs like this one documented the facade as the city's architecture was being recorded for public and official use.
