Coatesville, in Chester County, Pennsylvania, grew up around iron and steel along the Brandywine Creek and the rail lines that carried its products out. The Lukens Steel works, which rolled heavy plate, was the town's dominant employer, and many of its families depended on the mill's shifts and its furnaces. The seminary shown here stood as one of the institutions that gave the town its schools and church life beside the industry. Coatesville's civic life was shaped by that mix of mill labor and local congregations, and the community was also marked by the 1906 lynching of Zachariah Walker, an event that drew national attention and left a lasting mark on the borough's reputation.
