Phoenixville, on the Schuylkill River in Chester County, Pennsylvania, was a mill town in the later nineteenth century, and its economy rested largely on iron. The Phoenix Iron Company, whose works dominated the riverfront, rolled iron and built bridges, drawing workers and their families into the borough from across the region. A residence combined with a store, like the Edwin Price property on this street, would have served a community where foundry shifts set the daily rhythm and neighbors often bought goods from local merchants on credit. As the population grew, churches, schools, and rows of houses climbed the hillsides above the mills, and residents knew their borough as one of the iron centers of the Schuylkill Valley.
