Phoenixville, in Chester County, Pennsylvania, sat on the Schuylkill River in the mid-1870s, when its growth rested on iron. The Phoenix Iron Company's mills along the river made rails, plate, and structural iron, and the works drew workers and their families into a borough that was still small enough for a druggist's shop to serve most of its streets. The river and the canal carried freight, and rail lines in the valley tied the town to Philadelphia and the coal and iron country to the north. Dr. Levi Oberholtzer's wholesale and retail drug business reflected this industrial town, where mill accidents, household illnesses, and the needs of a growing population kept a well-stocked pharmacy busy.
