Chester, Pennsylvania, in 1885 was a river city on the Delaware, southwest of Philadelphia, whose economy rested on heavy industry and shipping. The John Roach shipyard on the riverfront had earned a reputation for building iron and steel vessels, including warships for the United States Navy in the early 1880s. Mills and factories along the waterfront and the Pennsylvania Railroad line drew workers from the surrounding countryside and from abroad, and the town's streets, churches, and row houses reflected a population that depended on wages from the docks and workshops. Local politics centered on the borough and county seat of Delaware County, and residents judged the town by its shipyards and its steady work. The street-by-street detail in this view records a community at the height of that industrial period, before the twentieth century changed its shipbuilding and manufacturing base.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of Chester, Pennsylvania, drawn in 1885. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders. |
