Phoenixville, in Chester County, Pennsylvania, grew up along the Schuylkill River in the second half of the nineteenth century, when iron was the town's main business. The Phoenix Iron Company, which had roots in a works founded in the 1840s, turned out rails, boiler plate, and iron for bridges, and its furnaces and rolling mills drew workers and families from across the region. The Schuylkill Valley's canal and railroad lines carried raw materials in and finished iron out, so the river flats and the streets climbing the hillside around the mills shaped daily life. Residents knew Phoenixville as an ironmaking borough, where shift whistles set the rhythm of the day and a family's fortunes often rose or fell with the mill's orders.
