Few hotels sit as close to the Great Pyramid of Giza as Mena House, which stands on the edge of the desert with the monuments rising just beyond its grounds. The building began as a hunting lodge built for the Egyptian rulers before opening to paying guests, and its guest list grew to include European and American travelers who came to Egypt for the views. The warm brown tones of this sepia print suggest the early twentieth century, when such photographs circulated as souvenirs of a winter trip to Cairo. The filing under taverns and saloons reflects the hotel's role as a place for meals and social gatherings rather than a bar scene.
