Looking west from the Kennedy Center's terraces, this panorama takes in the Potomac River and the city beyond it. The arts complex was built as a national memorial to John F. Kennedy and opened in 1971, so the view reflects a much later Washington than the one Theodore Roosevelt knew. Its place on this board is a fitting link, since Theodore Roosevelt Island, a wooded memorial to the president, lies in the river nearby. Viewers can use the scene to compare the capital's skyline with the landscape Roosevelt helped shape through conservation and city planning.
