Indianapolis Speedway, 1910, shows the 2.5-mile oval that Carl Fisher and his partners opened on the prairie west of Indianapolis in August 1909. The capital was then one of the country's leading automobile manufacturing centers, with makers such as Marmon, Stutz and National building cars nearby, and the track gave them a proving ground where speed and endurance could be shown to buyers. The surface was laid with millions of paving bricks, which earned the course the nickname "The Brickyard" and made it hard on tires and drivers alike. Races drew large crowds from across the Midwest, and by 1910 the company was already planning a 500-mile race for the following year.
