Few places in the park show as many thermal features at once as the Lower Geyser Basin, and this view, titled in German as an overview taken from the Twin Buttes, looks across that whole cluster of springs, pools and geysers. The Twin Buttes rise above the Firehole River, giving a vantage that lets the basin's network of runoff channels and steaming ground be read at a glance. Yellowstone was set aside as the first national park in 1872, and early surveys and written accounts of its geysers often relied on such high viewpoints to record the layout of the thermal areas. Its German title suggests it was made for a European audience or drawn from a German-language publication.
